"Summer Strategy Against Violence" Begins Saturday With City-Wide Prayer

Four Simultaneous Vigils Around City Pray for Peace

Indianapolis, IN - June 18, 2009

The day before Summer officially begins, four (4) simultaneous one hour prayer vigils will be held around the city.  This Saturday, June 20th, at 12noon, local pastors, congregants, and members of the community will gather at four different locations to send a message to both heaven and earth.  Prayers for peace will be offered by local ministers, as well as pleas to stop the violence and promote peace in the streets.

A recent Pastors & Community Leaders Breakfast was held at the Walker Theater to introduce "Summer Strategy Against Violence" which includes the City-Wide Prayer Vigil.  Pastors from various denominations were present and have agreed to come together for this strategic effort.

Details of an upcoming "Gun Buy-back" program (a part of the Summer Strategy) will also be shared at each vigil site.

The four prayer vigil sites (Saturday, Noon-1pm) are:

Northside / Broad Ripple Park - 1610 Broad Ripple Avenue
(by shelter/behind swimming pool)

Southside / Southern Plaza - 4200 S. East Street
(East street - behind Kroger facing the Aspen Dental)
Eastside / Devington Plaza Shopping Center - 6000 E. 46th Street
(46th & Arlington Ave. - parking lot off Arlington Ave. between Arlington High School & Devington Plaza)

Westside / Lafayette Square Mall - 38th & Lafayette Road
(parking lot next to former Sears Auto Service Center)

Flyers:  What To Do This Summer?

Local Pastors & Community Leaders have been asked to submit information pertaining to events, programs, and activities for youth offered during the summer months.  The goal is to minimize "idle time" that leads to mischief.  Flyers will be distributed to youth and adults at IBE, with a weblink to a list of summer activities for youth around the city.  If your church or community group is offering events, programs or activities for youth this summer click here.  A list of these events can be accessed from website www.drivebyprayer.com.

Front Porch & Expo
Peace In The Streets - Safety Teams

Each year during the Expo's Summer Celebration, Faith and Community Organizations get together and patrol downtown to encourage our young people to be safe while they have a good time.  The group has been highly respected by the youth attending IBE and seeks to enlarge its ranks this year.  We are encouraging churches to get involved and create a greater presence of "Faith in the streets" IBE weekend.  For more information or to get involved contact Douglas Hairston by clicking here.

Street Evangelism - IBE Weekend

There are several churches (including the Drive-by Prayer Vigil) who have organized evangelism teams to minister to youth downtown IBE weekend.  These small circles of ministry around the downtown area are yet another means of dissuading youth from the outbreak of violence and mischief while hanging around downtown.  We would encourage this activity, however, we will want to work in concert with local law enforcement and the "Peace In The Streets Safety Teams."  In other words, it's important that ministry circles not interrupt the crowd/traffic flow.  There are several prime spots downtown containing large groups of youth outside the general traffic flow that would be ideal for ministry.  If you are interested in receiving information pertaining to these suggested spots click here
